Rising stars London Grammar impress at rescheduled gig

London Grammar played their rescheduled London tour date at the Troxy, an Art Deco theatre in Stepney, last night (March 6).

The rising stars had initially intended to perform there at the beginning of February but the date has to be rescheduled due to illness.

It was a big night for the band – not only because they hail from London, but also because the entire show was being filmed for their upcoming music video Shyer, a track from their acclaimed debut album If You Wait.

The trip-hop trio kicked off their set with their most recent single Hey Now, which frontwoman Hannah Reid sang with haunting vocals which silenced the room. The band were accompanied during their hour-long set by an impressive colourful light show and a live orchestra.

For two of the slower songs, Reid turned her back to the crowd and took to the piano, telling the crowd she wanted “to pretend you’re not here for a bit – no offence or anything!”.

The set incorporated all of the tracks from their debut album, with highs of Wasting My Young Years, Nightcall and, most of all, the synths and strobe lighting of final song Metal and Dust.

The audience were also lucky enough to get a second helping of Shyer – after Reid had popped backstage for a cheeky shoe change.

Supporting London Grammar was indie-pop singer-songwriter Dan Croll, who featured in our recent Naked Issue’s Likely Lads feature alongside Joel Compass and Sam Smith as one to watch this year. His music was lively and upbeat, and he worked the crowd brilliantly.

London Grammar are now heading off on a North American tour, but will return to the UK for a seven-date jaunt in June.
