Hit LGBT musical ‘Everybody’s Talking About Jamie’ to be turned into a movie

The uplifting story about a 16-year-old who dreams of being a drag queen is headed for the big screen.

After taking the West End by storm over the last six months, hit LGBT musical Everybody’s Talking About Jamie is heading for the big screen.

Producers confirmed over the weekend (May 26) that the uplifting story a 16-year-old schoolboy who dreams of becoming a drag queen is set to be turned into a movie by Sheffield-based production company Warp Films.

Based on a 2011 BBC Three documentary Jamie: Drag Queen at 16, Everybody’s Talking About Jamie premiered at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield in February 2017 before transferring to the Apoloo Theatre in London’s West End last November. 

Featuring music by The Feeling’s Dan Gillespie-Sells, the musical was honoured with the Culture Award at the Attitude Awards 2017 before being nominated for five prizes at this year’s Olivier Awards.

Jamie Campbell, the boy who inspired the story, said of the news: “All I originally wanted was to go to my school prom in a dress. Then Firecracker made the documentary. My story then inspired a West End musical. Now it’s a film! It’s incredible. Even I couldn’t have dreamed it.”

As well as the movie adaptation, which is set to begin filming in Spring 2019, Everybody’s Talking About Jamie has had its West End run extended until next April, with tickets set to go on sale from Wednesday (May 30).

The show is also set to be broadcast live in cinemas across the UK on July 5, and internationally this autumn, so there’s no excuse to get aboard the Everybody’s Talking About Jamie train before the big screen adatation hits screens.
