US Judge rules that University of North Carolina can’t use HB2 to block trans bathroom access

US District Court Judge Thomas Schroeder has ruled that the University of North Carolina must allow transgender students and staff to use the toilets that match their gender identity.

This comes after an the House Bill 2 was passed in March, requiring transgender people to use toilets that correspond to their ‘birth’ gender.

The law led some musicians, businesses and sports teams to boycott the state over the anti-LGBT law.

According to the BBC, Schroeder said three plaintiffs challenging the law had a strong chance of proving that HB2 is violating federal law. He then temporarily stopped the university from applying the law.

One of the three people challenging the law Joaquin Carcano said:

“Today, the tightness that I have felt in my chest every day… has eased. But the fight is not over: we won’t rest until this discriminatory law is defeated.”

The full case to challenge HB2 is expected to go on trial in November.
