A teenager in Indiana was left with a broken nose after he was attacked in a school locker room because he is gay.
The Alexandria Monroe High School student was getting dressed following gym class earlier this week when he was approached and attacked by a group of boys who started punching him in the locker room.
While speaking to WTHR, the student – who wished to remain anonymous – said: “I felt him punch me a couple more times and I hit my face on the mirror and then he punched me in the head twice.
“It happened so fast. I can remember them holding me against the wall.”
The victim was left with a broken nose following the unprovoked attack but the student said he is used to homophobic bullying in his school.
He added: “I’ve gotten so used to it over the years that it doesn’t phase me much.
“I just tell myself to forget what happened and try to act like it never happened.
“I’m not ok, but I will be. Stay true to yourself and if you get hit, do the best you can to make sure it never happens again.”
According to the high school principal, Tom Johns, one student has been disciplined following the attack but said investigations are still ongoing.
He said: “You hate when these things happen. It makes you sick to your stomach.
“We had some other kids involved and we’re trying to figure out what their roles were. We try to do everything we can to teach tolerance and acceptance.
“At the end of the day, the parents have the responsibility to teach open mindedness and acceptance.”
