Selena Gomez to donate proceeds from North Carolina show to LGBT charity

North Carolina’s controversial HB2 law bars transgender people from using the bathroom of the gender with which they identify.

A number of musicians have cancelled their shows in the state over the anti-LGBT laws including Maroon 5, Nick Jonas and Demi Lovato, Ringo Starr and Bruce Springsteen.

Selena Gomez has announced however that she will go on to perform in the state and then donate a portion of the show’s proceeds to the LGBT advocacy group Equality North Carolina who is working to repeal the state’s law.

Speaking to People yesterday (June 3), Gomez said:

“I am very fortunate to have grown up in a home where I learned from an early age that everyone should be treated equally. I went back and forth on whether I should cancel my concert in North Carolina, and ultimately I think what is right for me is to move forward with my show and donate a portion of the proceeds to Equality North Carolina and their effort to defeat this act of discrimination.”

Gomez is due to perform on June 7 at the Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte.

She adds, “I’ve been reassured the venue I will be performing in has gender neutral bathrooms as I want everyone coming to my show to be welcomed.”

“I feel like my generation is the most progressive one yet and believe there will be a day soon when laws like HB2 won’t even be a consideration.”
