Putin seeks constitutional ban on same-sex marriage

Vladimir Putin has submitted a proposal to establish a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage in Russia.
The drafted amendment mentions Russia’s “faith in God” and states that marriage is between “a man and a woman”, according to the lower House of Parliament’s vice speaker, Pyotr Tolstoy, The DW reports.
Russian president Putin has long been aligned with the Russian Orthodox Church and been a vocal opponent of LGBTQ rights introducing the country’s infamous anti-gay ‘propaganda’ law back in 2013.
Last month, he vowed to never to allow same-sex parenting or marriage in Russia as long as he is president.
Putin, who has served as president since 2012, and also held the position from 2000 until 2008, said: “As far as ‘parent number one’ and ‘parent number two’ goes, I’ve already spoken publicly about this and I’ll repeat it again: As long as I’m president this will not happen.
“There will be dad and mum.”
Putin was also asked to comment on a proposal to add a line in the constitution defining marriage as a union between a man and a woman.
He said: “We need only to think in what phrases and where to do this.”
