Ohio bakery refused to make birthday cake for woman because she’s lesbian
An Ohio bakery has come under fire after refusing to make a birthday cake for a lesbian couple who just got married two weeks earlier.
Candice Lowe ordered a birthday cake for her wife, Amanda but the bakery cancelled the order after finding out she was in a same-sex marriage.
The couple had just gotten married and Lowe received the news via text message while the couple were on their honeymoon in Florida.
Speaking to ABC, Lowe said, “After she saw me Facebook page, she found out that I was in a same-sex marriage and she should not do my cake.”
Her wife Amanda revealed that the news “ruined” their day.
“She did all of their effort to get a cake and gets a text message and has to tell me her surprise, it kind of ruined our day,” she said.
The couple took to Facebook to vent their frustration and received support.
Lowe said that she hopes the bakery will learn to avoid discriminating against someone because of their sexual preference, “especially over something as simple as a cake,” she adds.
Nick Komives, the Executive Director of Equality Toledo, said, “A story like this makes me pretty angry inside because I know it could happen to me at any time as well.”
He adds, “We don’t necessarily hear about it happening in our own backyard and it does make me a little bit upset. We’ve been working really hard to show that Toledo is welcoming to LGBT people.”
Sadly this hasn’t been the first instance of bakeries refusing to serve customers based on sexual preferences. A Texas baker refused to make a wedding cake for a gay couple and another bakery in Belfast refused to make a cake with a ‘gay slogan’.
