New York begins movement to ban gay ‘cure’ therapy, for minors in particular

Governor Andrew Cuomo yesterday revealed that the state of New York will move to ban gay ‘cure’ therapies, and in particular those aimed at attempting to convert the sexual identity of minors.

It has been announced that the change will be made by the state’s Department of Financial Services will ban insurers from funding gay ‘cure’ therapy for under 18-year-olds.

According to Pink News, Cuomo said in a statement: “New York has been at the forefront of acceptance and equality for the LGBT community for decades – and today we are continuing that legacy and leading by example.”

CEO of GLAAD, Sarah Kate Ellis, responded to the news saying: “No young person should suffer at the hands of the dangerous and discredited practice of conversion therapy. GLAAD applauds Governor Cuomo’s courageous stands against bigotry and bias, continuing his legacy of advancing equality and acceptance for LGBT New Yorkers.”

Closer to home, the UK Government says there are “no plans” to legislate a private member’s bill on the issue of conversion therapy.
