A marching band hit back at anti-LGBTQ rivals with a powerful performance.
During the halftime of a football game against Baylor University, the Marching Owl Band waved dozens of Pride flags and played the Village People’s ‘YMCA’ and spelt out ‘Pride’ on the field after learning of their rival’s anti-LGBTQ policies.
According to the Houston Chronicle, the band incorporated the Pride theme after learning the opposition school had denied an LGBTQ student group, Gamma Alpha Upsilon (GAY), recognition and funding.
Despite, president of Baylor, Linda Livingstone, saying the school is ‘committed to providing a loving and caring community for all students – including our LGBTQ students’, she also cited several anti-LGBTQ policies.
Their sexual conduct policy states that ‘Baylor students will not participate in advocacy groups which promote understandings of sexuality that are contrary to Biblical teaching’ which includes ‘heterosexual sex outside of marriage and homosexual behaviour’.
Their policy states: “Christian churches across the ages and around the world have affirmed purity in singleness and fidelity in marriage between a man and a woman as the biblical norm.”
Chad Fisher – spokesman for the Marching Owl Band – hit back at Baylor’s anti-LGBTQ policies and called them ‘ridiculous’.
Fisher said: “And so we all got to our show writing meeting Sunday, and we were like, ‘Oh, my gosh, this is like exactly what our show needs to be about’. We absolutely need to call Baylor out for this.’
“From there, it just kind of happened.”
