London Pride will hold a minute’s silence for the Orlando shooting victims
Thousands of people marching in today’s Pride parade in London will hold a minute’s silence to remember the victims of the Orlando shooting.
The parade will feature Vienna’s ‘gay’ traffic lights and began at 11am in the West End and will eventually come to an end at Whitehall.
The BBC reports that the Red Arrows will fly past the march for the first time and the rainbow flag will be flying at Parliament.
Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, who has urged Lambeth council to protect the Royal Vauxhall Tavern, will be addressing the parade and LGBT choir, The Pink Singers will perform.
Over 100 Met officers will be taking part in the parade as well as more than 200 military personnel.
Peter Tatchell, who organised the first parade, is taking part in today’s 43rd parade and said, “In the wake of the horrific mass murder of LGBT people by an Islamist gunman in Orlando, we are highlighting the need for dialogue, unity and solidarity between the Muslim and LGBT communities – to oppose all hate.”
Scotland Yard also announced an increase in security following the mass shooting in Orlando that left 49 dead.
Vigils were held all over the world including London’s Soho which saw thousands come together to remember the victims.
