London gets ‘gay’ traffic lights for Pride

Remember Vienna’s gay traffic lights?

Well, good news. They’re coming to London for Pride!

This weekend, around 50 traffic lights were swapped for the Pride In London custom-made designs, right at the heart of Trafalgar Square and its surroundings.

The Vienna campaign is now taking place in London this year and diversity will be represented under the form of seven symbols.

They include: lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community emblems as well as some heart-shaped same-sex-couples holding hands.

Following the installation the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, claimed he was “very proud” of the LGBT community in London and of the city’s diversity and acceptance. He also added that, “Our thoughts and prayers are, of course, still with the families and friends of the victims of the hideous recent attack in Orlando.”

Meanwhile Director of Pride in London, Alison Camps, said, “For many people acceptance and tolerance is a luxury they don’t have, and these lights are another display of how welcoming and accepting London is.”

Naturally, everyone took to Twitter to share their reactions and so far they’ve been rather encouraging.

You can expect special performances, drag acts and a special appearance from Pride’s Got Talent Jack Feureisen at selected London spots – The Pride Festival is taking place from June the 10 to the 26 with its main weekend event happening this weekend (June 25-26)..

And London has never been so proud.
