LGBT domestic abuse helpline Broken Rainbow saved from closure by government funding

LGBT domestic violence helpline Broken Rainbow has been granted government funding for a further 12 months.
The registered charity provides essential support for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender victims and survivors of domestic abuse.
However, earlier this year they warned that the helpline faced closure without much-needed funds.
The Home Office has now confirmed an additional 12 months of funding will be provided, following a public campaign.
Confirmation was received just hours before the charity’s board was due to meet to discuss the situation, shortly after a petition including 30,000 signatures had been delivered to the Home Secretary.
Responding to the news, the charity said yesterday (March 6): “Broken Rainbow is extremely grateful for your support and we will continue to work for a society where LGBT victims of domestic violence and abuse have access to the services they need, free of any prejudice and homophobia.”
Managing Director Jo Harvey Barringer added: “What has kept us going these past difficult months has been the incredible level of support from the general public particularly those from within the LGBT community and the women’s domestic violence sector.
“We know what we do makes a difference to many people’s lives, but for them to share what has been some of their most difficult life experiences and how we made a positive difference to that, has been humbling and affirming that the service we offer is a vital one that needs to continue.”
