Kansas bill offers $2500 payout to those who spot a trans person in the ‘wrong’ bathroom

Following the creation of a pair of anti-transgender bills by Kansas state lawmakers that could see transgender students sued for using the ‘wrong’ bathroom, it has emerged that the bill will also offer an incentive for fellow bathroom-users to report them by allowing them to sue their place of eduction for $2500.

The ‘Student Physical Privacy Act’ would allow anyone who asses a transgender person in the ‘wrong’ bathroom could then sue their school for $2,500 each and every time it happens, reports ThinkProgress.

The two revised bills now state that “allowing students to use restrooms, locker rooms and showers that are reserved for students of a different sex will create potential embarrassment, shame, and psychological injury to students” – in effect declaring that transgender students are going to harm other students just by using the same facility alongside them.

The bills would make a target out of transgender students of all ages, as they apply to children in public schools and also public university in the state.

A lawmaker in Kansas, Sen. Mary Pilcher-Cook spoke out in favour of the bill when talking to 13 News, saying: “Parents have reached out afraid for their children’s safety and they do not want attention for fear of being called a bigot, this legislation ensures accommodations, while still protecting everyone’s privacy rights.”
