Justine Greening appointed UK’s first ever LGBT Minister for Equalities

Conservative MP Justine Greening, who came out publicly just two weeks ago during Pride in London, has been announced as Britain’s new Education Secretary and Minster for Women and Equalities – making her the first LGBT politician to hold the role.

Greening replaces Nicky Morgan, who was controversially appointed to the role having voted against same-sex marriage in 2013, an issue she later admitted she had changed her mind on.

Morgan tweeted that she was “disappointed” to be leaving the “wonderful” roles.

After coming out during Pride, Greening said she was, “amazed and overwhelmed” at the support she received.

Greening came out through a tweet in which she joked about the UK’s recent Eu referendum result, saying: “Today’s a good day to say I’m in a happy same sex relationship, I campaigned for Stronger In but sometimes you’re better off out!”

Many of her colleagues, including the former prime minister David Cameron, congratulated her on her announcement.

Notable, Greening also becomes the first Education Secretary in British history to have been state-educated.
