Judge denies request to remove Britney Spears’ father from conservatorship
The decision relates to a request made in November

A request to remove Britney Spears’ father from her conservatorship was denied by a US judge yesterday (30 June 2021).
The request was made last November by the pop star’s lawyer, so this is not a response to the ‘Stronger’ singer’s emotional testimony last week, during which she likened her treatment to “slavery” and “sex-trafficking.”
Los Angeles Superior Court ruled the request is “denied without prejudice.”
Britney’s father, Jamie Spears, has been a co-conservator of the star’s $60 million estate since 2008, following her widely-publicised personal troubles in 2007. He relinquished his role overseeing her personal affairs in 2019, but retained control over her finances and business. Conservator Jodi Montgomery is currently in charge of Britney’s person.

Courts grant conservatorships for people unable to make their own decisions, such as those with dementia or other mental illnesses.
Had it been successful, last November’s request would have made financial firm Bessemer Trust the only party in control of the conservatorship. Judge Brenda Penny made the firm the co-conservator.
The BBC reports a ruling can’t be made on Britney’s statement from last week until a formal petition to end the conservatorship is filed.
In last week’s explosive testimony, Britney alleged that her father “loved” controlling her. She also claimed she was prevented from getting married and coming off contraception, and that she’s been struggling with depression.
She told the court in Los Angeles: “I don’t feel like I can live a full life.”
Jamie Spears has vehemently denied the allegations, while his team on Tuesday petitioned for the court to “investigate the veracity of the allegations and claims made by Ms. Spears.”
