Joe Biden appoints gay man to role of social secretary at White House
As Biden celebrates team members of "diverse backgrounds and experience"
Joe Biden has appointed Carlos Elizondo to the role of social secretary at The White House – reportedly the first LGBTQ+ appointment of Biden’s administration.
Elizondo is gay, according to The Advocate, and lives with his partner in Washington, D.C.
He was previously special assistant to President Barack Obama and social secretary to Biden and wife Jill during Biden’s eight years as Vice President.
The appointment follows Democrat Biden’s recent win in the US Presidential election over Republican Donald Trump.
An announcement on the Biden transition team website explains how in his previous role as special assistant “Elizondo had responsibility for planning, managing, and successfully executing all events hosted by the Vice President and his family, to include visits by world leaders, members of Congress, business leaders, and other high-ranking dignitaries and celebrities.”

Commented President-elect Biden: “I’m proud to name additional members of our team who will help deliver the change America needs in these difficult times. Their dedication to overcoming the challenges facing our country today are rooted in their diverse backgrounds and experiences.
“They will serve the American people and help build back better, creating a more just, equitable, and united nation.”
Texas native Elizondo’s positions outside of government include Senior Director of Presidential Events at Georgetown University, Manager of Special Activities and Protocol at Walt Disney World.
