Hundreds take to Turkish streets in memory of LGBT activist who was raped and burned to death

On Sunday night (21st August) more than 200 hundred people took to the streets of Turkey to protest the appalling murder of LGBT activist Hande Kader last week.

The 22-year-old trans woman’s badly burned body was found just two weeks after the murder of gay Syrian, Muhammad Wisam Sankari, who was found beheaded also in Istanbul.

Kader’s death has spakred an outpouring of anger and grief among the country’s LGBT community, and a couple Turkish MPs were present at the peaceful portest, where many painted tears of blood on their faces.

No one has been arrested for the Kader’s murder.

The activist rose to fame when she was at the forefront of water cannons and and police riots at Istanbul gay pride last June and has since protested for the rights of LGBT people.
