Grindr warns Egypt users police may be watching them

Grindr has warned its users in Egypt that police may be posing as fellow regular users of the gay dating app in order to “entrap them”.

See the warning that Egyptian Grindr users are receiving below.

The warning follows news, as reported by Ahram Online, that six Egyptian men were given prison sentences on Thursday (September 25) after advertising their apartment on social media sites as a place gay men could use for sexual relations.

Now Egyptian officials have apparently told Buzzfeed that “dozens of Facebook groups” popular with gay men are being watched. However, the same officials claim not to be aware of Grindr.

Homosexuality is legal in Egypt, but gay people often face discrimination and are not infrequently arrested on public decency charges.

Nine Egyptian men were arrested earlier this month (September) and asked to undergo medical tests after they allegedly appeared in a video depicting a gay marriage. They later “tested negatively” to homosexuality – read more here.
