Carrie Johnson: ‘Blatantly untrue’ that you can’t be LGBTQ and Conservative

Johnson also insists her husband is "completely committed" to LGBTQ rights in new speech

Carrie Johnson has said it is “blatantly untrue” that you can’t be LGBTQ and a Conservative.

The wife of Prime Minister Boris Johnson, leader of the Conservative Party, was attending this week’s Conservative Party conference in Manchester when she made the comments.

Speaking at a Pride event in partnership with Stonewall yesterday (6 October 2021), the 32-year-old added that her husband is “completely committed” to LGBTQ rights.

“Illogical”

Addressing a crowd of 100 – including Boris and Equalities Minister Liz Truss –  at the Midland Hotel in Manchester, Johnson reportedly said in a speech [as per Pink News]: “There are still those who tell me that being LGBT+ and a Tory is somehow incompatible.

“Well, looking around me tonight, we can see that is blatantly untrue.”

She added: “The idea that your sexual orientation or gender identity should determine your politics is now as illogical as saying your height or your hair colour should.”

“I want you all to know that we now have a prime minister who is completely committed to accepting those gains and extending them further,” she continued, pointing the former Mayor of London voting for marriage equality and recently appointing the Tory LGBTQ ‘Special Envoy’ Lord Nick Herbert.

Johnson’s remarks follow controversy over the Conservative Party hosting the LGB Alliance at the conference, which wraps today (6 October 2021).
