British United Reformed Church approves same-sex marriage in its buildings

Same-sex marriages will now be allowed to take place in United Reformed Church buildings in the UK, after an overwhelming vote in favour of the unions, according to the BBC

The Church has about 60,000 members, which makes it the largest Christian group in Britain to offer same-sex weddings. However individual churches will not be forced to adhere to the policy.

The general secretary of the URC called the vote “an important decision – at which some will rejoice and with which others will be uncomfortable.”

He added, “this has been a sensitive issue for many in our churches”.

“It has been important to take our time over the decision process, and to listen as carefully as we can to one another along the way.”

Smaller denominations, such as the Quakers and the Unitarians have already been performing same-sex ceremonies, while the Scottish Episcopal Church will take its final vote on the matter next summer.
