Amnesty International launches same-sex marriage campaign ahead of Ireland’s referendum

Amnesty International will launch their same-sex marriage campaign in Dublin today.

Ireland will vote in the marriage equality referendum in May, with Amnesty International calling for a ‘yes’ vote.

Current plays reportedly suggest that 77% will vote in favour, while there have been warnings of possible increased homophobia as May 22 approaches.

Executive Director of Amnesty International Colm O’Gorman said that in the last week alone, the group had been contacted by “thousands of people who want to be part” of the campaign.

“We’re expecting a really positive, joyous, celebratory rally calling for a ‘Yes’ vote,” he added.

A poll last month claimed that 5% of Ireland’s LGBT community would be voting against the amendment.

Meanwhile, the Archbishop of Dublin has criticised campaigners against same-sex marriage for using “obnoxious, insulting and unchristian” language to make their point.
