Viewers delighted as Russell T Davies gives A Midsummer Night’s Dream gay twist
The BBC celebrated Shakespeare’s 400th birthday last night (May 30) with a new feature-length adaptation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, written by Russell T Davies, and viewers were left delighted after the plot included a gay kiss.
Some of the major plot lines in the original work were re-written, including the killing of characters that do not die in the original, a dance scene and, of course, the gay characters.
Titania and Hippolyta shared a lesbian kiss at the end of the production, which turned Hippolyta into a fairy – The original plot sees Hippolyta marrying Theseus and Titania married to Oberon, king of the fairies.
It also seems that two men found love with each other in the final dance scene.
Most viewers were thrilled to see the Bard’s work updated for the 21st century…
