‘The Inheritance’ to open on Broadway this September

The gay epic play by Matthew Lopez took home four Olivier Awards during its West End run

The award-winning LGBTQ epic The Inheritance is set to open on Broadway this September.

Matthew Lopez’s seven-hour epic about the loves and lives of gay men in New York a generation after the Aids crisis had a successful run at the Young Vic Theatre before transferring to the Noel Coward Theatre in London’s West End.

Following the success of the epic, the play cemented itself as the most important gay play of the decade after being nominated for eight Olivier Awards this year and taking home four awards – including Best New Play.

The Inheritance was widely praised, and it was only a matter of time before it moved across the Atlantic Ocean.

Now, the official Twitter account revealed that it will be making its Broadway debut this September – with tickets going on sale this month.

The post – which included a trailer – read: “A new play, generations in the making begins with this trailer.

“#TheInheritance is coming to Broadway this Fall starting September 27. Tickets on sale June 24.”

Inspired by E.M. Forster’s 1910 novel Howards End, it has enjoyed comparisons to Tony Kushner’s modern gay classic Angels in America, which enjoyed its own revival at the National Theatre last year.

The Inheritance consists of two parts of over three hours which can be viewed on the same day or over consecutive evenings.

It’s not known whether the West End cast – which included Kyle Soller and Vanessa Redgrave – will join the new Broadway production.
