Taron Egerton pays tribute to Elton John and David Furnish as he wins Golden Globe for ‘Rocketman’

"This role has changed my life."

Taron Egerton upset the odds at the Golden Globes as he was named the suprise winner of the award for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy (Film) for his acclaimed turn in Elton John biopic Rocketman.

The Welsh actor, 30, beat Eddie Murphy, Roman Griffin Davis, Daniel Craig and bookies’ favourite Leonardo Di Caprio to take home the coveted prize during Sunday night’s (5 January) star-studded ceremony in Los Angeles.

Taron, who also accepted the Attitude Film Award at the Virgin Atlantic Attitude Awards, powered by Jaguar, for Rocketman last October, used his acceptance speech to pay tribute to Sir Elton and his husband David Furnish, who could be seen celebrating wildly as his win was announced.

“This role has changed my life. It’s been the best experience of my life. I am so proud of the film,” Taron said, before thanking Furnish “for alllowing me to believe I was the man to play your husband.”

He added: “And finally, to Elton John. Thank you for the music. Thank you for living a life less ordinary and thank you for being my friend.”

Meanwhile, Sir Elton also celebrated a Golden Globes win in the Best Original Song category with longtime collaborator Bernie Taupin, taking home the prize for Rocketman track ‘(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again’.
