Ruby Rose cast as first openly gay superhero Batwoman in standalone series

The actress took to Instagram to admit she was 'thrilled and honoured'

Ruby Rose has been cast as the first ever openly gay superhero in the standalone TV series Batwoman.

The Orange is the New Black actress took to Instagram post to announce the news and admitted she was “thrilled and honoured” to take on the iconic DC Comics character.

She wrote: “The Bat is out of the bag and I am beyond thrilled and honored.

“I’m also an emotional wreck.. because this is a childhood dream.

“This is something I would have died to have seen on TV when I was a young member of the LGBT community who never felt represented on tv and felt alone and different.

“Thank you everyone. Thank you god.”

The character is set to be introduced this December in a crossover episode of other DC TV series including The Flash, Arrow and Supergirl.

The standalone series – which is slated for a 2019/2020 release – follows the superhero, whose real name is Kate Kane, who is described as a “highly trained street fighter with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind”.

Batwoman first appeared in the DC Comics universe as a romantic interest for Batman and since 2006 she has been openly gay when she was reintroduced in the comics as a lesbian of Jewish decent.
