Neil Patrick Harris to play Doctor Who’s ‘greatest enemy’ in anniversary series

The How I Met Your Mother actor said: "I’ll try my hardest to do my worst."

Neil Patrick Harris is set to play “the greatest enemy” that Doctor Who has ever faced in the upcoming series of the show.

The announcement was made on Monday (13 June) by returning showrunner Russell T Davies and NPH on social media. Davies welcomed NPH to Cardiff, where the series is filming, and said it was an “honour” to have the Hedwig and the Angry Inch Tony winner in the cast.

In a post showing Neil in the role, Davies added: “Playing the greatest enemy the Doctor has ever faced. Such a great actor, such a great man, it’s an honour and a hoot. Have fun!”

In his own post, shared the same image with the caption: “My current gig. Never looked more dashing. Thank you for inviting me into your Whoniverse, @russelltdavies63 . I’ll try my hardest to do my worst. This Doctor has no idea what’s in store. And even if he does… Who cares? Ha ha ha HA ha-ha-ha!”

The 60th-anniversary series, which will air in 2023, is shaping up to be quite the event. Harris joins recently announced Doctor played by Sex Education‘s Ncuti Gatwa as well as Heartstopper‘s Yasmin Finney who will be playing a character called Rose.

Former stars David Tennant and Catherine Tate are set to return having previously played the Doctor and his assistant, Donna respectively. 

The BBC announced last September that Russell T. Davies, who’s been away from the show for 12 years, is returning to help the show prepare for its 60th anniversary.

Picking the show up in 2005, Davies helped turn it into the global phenomenon it has become. Since then, there have been several incarnations of the regenerating Time Lord from Christopher Eccleston to the current Doctor played by Jodie Whitaker.
