A lesbian couple painted their home in rainbow colours to troll their anti-gay neighbours.
Lisa Licata and Sherry Lau live in Penn Hills, Pennsylvania, but have had issues with their next-door neighbours Ron Makay and Lolanda Wieczorkowski.
The couple claimed that the neighbours have been harassing them ever since finding out the pair were married. They allegedly call the couple homophobic slurs and Makay was accused of shooting their dog with an air rifle. He was charged with animal cruelty but has denied the accusation.
When the homophobic slurs first intensified, the couple decided to pain their fence in rainbow colours. However, it didn’t stop their neighbours from complaining, so the couple decided to paint their house.
In a Facebook post from last month, Lau shared an image of the work-in-progress and wrote: “We are gay and we are here to stay.”
Speaking to WTAE Pittsburgh, Licata said: “When he protested against the fence being rainbow, that’s when we decided, let’s do the house.”
Lau added: “This is the 21st century. We live here. We’re not moving. My family accepts us. Our friends accept us. If you don’t like it, just live your life, leave us alone and everything’s cool.”
According to Mashable, the neighbourhood’s response to the rainbow house has been supportive and their neighbours have since calmed down.
In a Facebook message to Mashable, Licata said: “The reaction of the community has been great! Mostly because everyone has been so supportive… The neighbours have been quiet because they’ve been told by their attorney to be quiet.”
