Kylie Minogue becomes 1st woman to top UK album chart over five consecutive decades

The 80s, 90s, 00s, 10s and 20s!

Kylie Minogue made history today as the first woman to score number one albums in the UK across five consecutive decades.

The star’s new album Disco saw off stiff competition from this week’s number two, Little Mix’s Confetti. 

Disco hits the top spot with the biggest opening week sales of 2020 so far: 55,000. This also marks Kylie’s highest sales week since 2010’s Aphrodite.

“Lost for words”

Reacting to the news, gay icon Kylie told the Official Charts Company: “Disco has entered the charts at Number one! I don’t know what to say, I’m lost for words, thank you to everyone who has supported this album and this campaign, it means the world to me.

Congrats, Kylie!

The 52-year-old’s previous number one albums in the UK are: her self-titled debut Kylie (1988), follow up Enjoy Yourself (1989), Greatest Hits (1992), Fever (2001), Aphrodite (2010), Golden (2018) and Step Back in Time: The Definitive Collection (2019).

The achievement follows Kylie speaking out in support of trans women last weekend, telling The Guardian: “If you’re a transgender woman, you should use the women’s facilities, surely.”
