Kim Petras releases ‘Future Starts Now’ as singer inks major label record deal

The German 'Malibu' singer spent lockdown working on her new album.

Kim Petras has released her first single from her upcoming album and ‘ain’t nobody going to stop me,’… or her anyway!

The release of the total bop ‘Future Starts Now’ coincides with Petras signing with Republic Records in a new partnership.

No release date has been given for the album yet, so we’re just going to have to live on this little bit of pop-glory for the time being.

“This project means the world to me”

Announcing the single’s release on Twitter, Petras said: “THE FUTURE STARTS NOW it’s out !! i can’t believe it thank u guys for sticking with me . this project means the world to me and i’m so excited to share it all with u !! now let’s all go listen together oui – ah !!!” [sic]

Accompanying the tweet is a 30-second clip of the song’s lyric video, which features raining croissants. The Parisian setting and form of precipitation is undoubtedly a nod to one of Petras’ influences for the album, the city of love itself.

Variety, which broke the news of the partnership between Petras and Republic Records, reports that the upcoming album, which was Petras’ way of coping with lockdown, captures the “excitement of Paris,” where Petras has “always found happiness.” 

Commenting on the single, as reported by Variety, Petras says: “I felt so anxious at the start of lockdown, because for me the most anxiety-inducing thing is not being able to work and do what I love. ‘Future Starts Now’ came from trying to stay present, instead of stressing about the future and all the lost time.”

We get that with lyrics such as “Ain’t nobody gonna stop me/don’t you let the music stop now” and “Worry ‘bout it in the morning/take it to another level”
