Julianne Moore wins Best Actress prize at Cannes

Julianne Moore has won the Best Actress prize at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
The British-American actress, 53, was lauded for her performance as an ageing A-lister in Maps to the Stars, a sharp Hollywood satire from director David Cronenberg.
Moore becomes only the second actress, after Juliette Binoche, to win the so-called European “best actress triple crown” for victories at the Cannes, Berlin and Venice film festivals over the years.
Meanwhile, Brit Timothy Spall took home Cannes’ Best Actor prize for his role in Mr Turner, Mike Leigh’s biopic of 19th century painter JMW Turner.
The festival’s top prize, the Palme D’Or, was awarded to Turkish film Winter Sleep, an epic domestic drama that Cannes’ Jury president, The Piano director Jane Campion, praised for having a “beautiful rhythm”.
Other well-known members of this year’s Cannes Film Festival Jury included Willem Dafoe, Gael Garcia Bernal, Nicolas Winding Refn, and Sofia Coppola.
