Janet Jackson enters the history books as ‘Unbreakable’ hits #1

Janet Jackson has continued to extend her legacy after scoring a historic Number One on the US Billboard 200 albums chart Unbreakable.

Despite a minimal promo campaign that’s not included even a single press interview, the All For You singer’s 11th studio album shifted over 116,000 copies upon its release last week, earning the 49-year-old her seventh chart-topping LP and making her one of just three acts to score a Number One album in each of the last four decades.

The success of Unbreakable propels Jackson into history books alongside Barbra Streisand and Bruce Springsteen as the only artists to top the album charts in the 80’s, 90’s, 00’s and 10’s, Billboard reports.

Unbreakable is Janet’s seventh Number One album after 2008’s Discipline, All For You (2001), The Velvet Rope (1997), janet. (1993), Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation 1814 (1989) and Control (1986). The only female artists with more are Barbra Streisand (with ten) and Madonna (who has eight).

Though she might have been quiet on the press front, the R&B icon’s latest campaign has been steadily gathering pace, led by lead single No Sleeep and supported by a new tour which kicked off in the Americas in August and is set to hit the UK in late March and early April 2016. After being honoured at the BET Awards earlier this year with an ‘Ultimate Icon’ title and an incredible all-star tribute performance, it’s nice to see that just months later Janet’s proved she’s no nostalgia act…
