Helen Mirren to play The Queen on Broadway

Helen Mirren is to bring one of her most famous roles to the US, it has been announced.

The actress will once again play The Queen when her award-winning West End play The Audience moves to Broadway in February 2015.

The play, written by Peter Morgan, imagines the weekly meetings between The Queen and the many Prime Minsters who have served under her, including Winston Churchill, Margaret Thatcher and David Cameron. Mirren starred as the long-reigning monarch for the duration of The Audience‘s three-month run last year at London’s Gielgud Theatre, and later won the Best Actress Olivier Award for her performance.

The 69 year-old actress previously stepped into the head of state’s court shoes for the critically acclaimed 2006 biopic The Queen, winning an Oscar for Best Actress in the process.

The Broadway run of The Audience will open for previews on February 17 at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre in New York, ahead of an official opening on March 8.
