Fortnite introduces Supergirl’s Dreamer as first trans character in new Pride update

Dreamer is breaking ground for a second time.

Fortnite has introduced its first-ever trans character and it’s the superhero Dreamer from the TV show, Supergirl. 

Dreamer/Nia Nal was introduced as part of the hit sandbox game’s Rainbow Royale update celebrating LGBTQ Pride on Wednesday (31 August).

In a character card as seen on the Hypex Twitter account is said to: “see the future through dreams and protects the world from nightmarish threats”.

The character broke ground as the first trans superhero on TV and was created specifically for the CW’s Supergirl series before being added to the comics universe and now the world of Fortnite. 

The Fandom Wiki for Dreamer/Nia Nal states that the character is a human-Naltorian hybrid and embraced her powers following her mother’s death. 

Played by trans actor Nicole Maines Dreamer joined the series in season four and went on to become of the group, the Superfriends. 

Maines celebrated the news on Instagram writing: I can FINALLY say it! DREAMER IS COMING TO FORTNITE!” indicating she had some knowledge of the update.

Also revealed to be joining Dreamer in Fortnite’s latest update are Ikora Rey, Exo Stranger, and Commander Zavala from the video game Destiny. 

Fortnite debuted in 2017 and includes battle royale, survival and creative modes that allow players to fight each other or create their own vitual worlds.

In 2021, players said they felt “laughed at” after a player who said Fortnite’s first ever Pride-themed event was “against nature” was allowed back on the platform after being temporarily suspended.
