‘Fleabag’ confessional scene nominated for Bafta TV ‘Must-See Moment’ Award

Andrew ‘Hot Priest’ Scott in the running for top television gong? Amen to that!

By Thomas Stichbury

No doubt about it, folks, we are living in a golden age of television – we defy anybody to tell us that Gemma Collins’ reality series Diva on Lockdown isn’t the very definition of 24-carat entertainment.

Pre-lockdown, Attitude joined a panel for the upcoming 2020 Virgin Media British Academy Television Awards to cherry-pick the nominees for the ‘Must-See Moment Award’. Celebrating the most watched, talked and tweeted about shows of the year, it is the only category voted for by the public.

Having sat on this secret, Alyssa Edwards style, for a few months, we can finally unveil the shortlist of scenes that invariably made you laugh, ugly cry, or clutch your pearls in horror. Attitude’s personal favourite made us want to go to church and slip into a confessional box wearing something sinfully slutty…

So, drum roll, please (or at least a couple of finger taps on your nearest surface), here are the six nominees. Beware, spoilers abound!

Fleabag – the confessional scene (BBC Three)

One word: kneel. In this hot-under-the-dog collar sequence from series two, sexual tensions boil over when Fleabag (Phoebe Waller-Bridge) opens up to Hot Priest (Andrew Scott) in his confessional box. The firecracker chemistry between Waller-Bridge and Scott also finally put to bed the myth that audiences wouldn’t buy a gay actor as a hetero heartthrob – everyone thirsted after this man of the cloth.

Coronation Street – the death of Sinead Osbourne (ITV)

After a year-long fight with cervical cancer, Sinead Osbourne (Katie McGlynn) dies peacefully at home while her new husband Daniel reads to their baby son, Bertie – our tear ducts still haven’t recovered.

Game of Thrones – Arya kills The Night King (Sky Atlantic/HBO)

The fantasy saga’s final season may have received a frosty reception from fans, but there is no denying the endorphin rush of watching GoT’s kick-ass heroine Arya (Maisie Williams) plunging a dagger into the chest of icy uber-villain, the Night King. Thaw-some stuff.

Gavin & Stacey – Nessa proposes to Smithy (BBC1)

Guaranteed to warm the cockles of even the coldest heart, the Christmas special reached a rousing conclusion when Nessa (Ruth Jones) got down on one knee and popped the question to Smithy (James Corden). Tidy, indeed.

Love Island – Michael recouples after Casa Amor (ITV2)

Sun, sea, scandal and genius editing. Amber and Michael were seemingly one of the strongest couples on the show, until, that is, Michael’s head was turned by new girl Joanna – oh, the shade of it all!

Line of Duty – John Corbett’s death (BBC1)

Corkscrew twists and turns are the bread and butter of the hit cop drama, but the brutal killing of John Corbett (Stephen Graham) still came as a shock and packed one hell of a gut punch.

Vote online now at virginmedia.com/bafta. Voting closes at 5pm on 15 July and the winner will be announced at the 2020 Virgin Media British Academy Television Awards on 31 July.

Hosted by Richard Ayoade, the Bafta TV ceremony will take place in a studio – in accordance with current restrictions – with nominees invited to accept their awards virtually.
