Britain’s first trans sitcom ‘Boy Meets Girl’ debuts on September 3

The first trailer for BBC2’s eager-anticipated new sitcom Boy Meets Girl has finally arrived.

The six-part comedy series, which is set to hit screens from 9:30pm on September 3 on BBC Two, is being billed as Britain’s first ever transgender sitcom, and critics are already hailing it as the spiritual successor to the broadcaster’s smash show Gavin and Stacey.

Boy Meets Girl is also notable for casting a transgender actress in a transgender role in the form of the show’s lead, Rebecca Root – the breakout star who we’ve spoken to in our brand new issue, out now.

Co-starring Harry Hepple and Denise Welch, the show tells the story of the developing relationship between 26-year-old Leo (Hepple) and 40-year-old Judy (Root). The Elliott Kerrigan-penned script was discovered through the Trans Comedy Award, a 2013 BBC talent search for scripts with positive portrayals of transgender character, before being commissioned for a full series last year.
