Billy Eichner to write and star in BROS – Hollywood’s first gay romcom from a major studio

The Lion King star's upcoming film will focus on two gay men with commitment issues who try to navigate a relationship

Billy Eichner is set to write, produce and star in the first romantic comedy from a major Hollywood studio.

BROS, which is due for 2022, will focus on two gay men with commitment issues who try to navigate a relationship.

Nicholas Stoller will direct, with Judd Apatow co-producing.

Confirming the news on Instagram, Billy said: “I’M MAKING A MOVIE!!!! Coming to a theater near you Aug 12, 2022!

“In shocking news, BROS will be the first rom com about gay men ever produced by a major studio and, apparently, I’m the first openly gay man to ever write and star in their own studio film. Only took 100 years! THANKS HOLLYWOOD!!!

“I often see gay people left out of those conversations”

According to industry bible Variety, Bros indeed makes Eicher the first out gay man to write and star in a major Hollywood movie.

Teasing the movie in a prior interview, he told the publication: “I’m honored that it’s me, but it should have been someone else 30 or 40 years ago.

“I hear people talking about diversity and inclusion, but I often see gay people left out of those conversations.

“The comedy community, which has always been such a straight man’s game, has not been kind to openly gay men.”

Speaking about his reaction to hit 2018 movie Love, Simon, Billy added: “It was so unusual to have a connection to what was happening on-screen instead of being a step or two removed. Love, Simon really got to me. I was shocked, because I think of myself as such a cynical bitch.”

Eichner was the voice of Timone in the 2019 version of The Lion King. His other screen credits include Parks and Recreation, Billy On the Street and American Horror Story.
