BFI Flare: London LGBTIQ+ Film Festival hits record digital reach and attendance

The fest saw 46,325 attendances across the UK, according to organisers

This year’s BFI Flare: London LGBTIQ+ Film Festival scored record UK-wide digital reach and audience attendance, organisers have announced.

The fest saw 46,325 attendances across the UK, plus worldwide audience views of 1.7 million for Five Films For Freedom in partnership with The British Council.

This includes 37,516 attendances for the film programme of features and shorts on BFI Player, plus 8,808 views for BFI Flare events.

The BFI Flare Screen Talk with Russell Tovey drew an audience of 4.4k across BFI YouTube and BFI Flare Facebook.

Flare, which closed on 28 March, featured 26 virtual feature premieres and 38 free shorts screened from 23 countries.

Organisers of the 35th edition of the festival say the most popular films included Peeter Rebane’s cold war drama Firebird and Sian A. Williams’ documentary on post-punk dyke culture Rebel Dykes.

“Different voices, different perspectives”

Tricia Tuttle, BFI Festivals Director said in a statement: “BFI Flare is the BFI’s fourth digital or digital hybrid Festival in 12 months, after Flare and London Film Festival in 2020 and BFI Future Film Festival earlier this year; these are festivals which champion great UK and international cinema, work which showcases different voices, different perspectives and stories which better help us understand ourselves and others. And as an organisation, this digital delivery has helped BFI go warp speed in our aims of offering access to audiences throughout the whole of the UK, with over 40% of audiences from these Festivals coming from outside of London.”
